"Mrs. Emily Hyatt

In the death of Mrs. Emily Hyatt, which occurred September 21st at the advanced age of 88 years 4 months and 14 days, Yorktown has lost another of its oldest residents. She was born at Carmel, N. Y., May 7, 1831, was the daughter of Reuben Hopkins and Minerva Hughson, and a descendant in the ninth generation of Stephen Hopkins who came over on the Mayflower. In 1850 she became the wife of Major Hyatt, also of Carmel, who died March 14, 1891. Fifty-nine years ago with her husband she removed to Yorktown to the farm where she resided until her death.

"She was the mother of seven children, four of whom survive her, one daughter, Miss Minnie L. Hyatt, a teacher at Jamaica, L. I., and three sons, Chester M., of Yorktown; Reuben H., of Yonkers, and Floyd W., of Delaware County.

"The funeral was held at her late residence on the 24th, the services being conducted by the Rev. H. B. Roberts and the Rev. W. J. Cumming. An appropriate hymn 'Asleep in Jesus,' was sung by Mrs. and Mrs. Albert Lee. Burial was in the family plot in the Raymond Cemetery at Carmel, N. Y., after a brief service in the Baptist Church of that place, of which she was a member, in which the same ministers and the pastor of the church took part, with two appropriate hymns by the choir. Mrs. Hyatt united with Carmel Baptist Church in early life, and during her long residence at Yorktown attended the Presbyterian Church ustil [sic] prevented by the infirmities of age.

"Mrs. Hyatt was highly esteemed by all who came in contact with her, for while she was a homemaker in the best sense of that term, yet her neighborly kindness and interest in all worthy causes outside of that circle, won the respect and affection of many who were honored by her friendship throughout a long life. With patient, self-sacrificing love she nobly filled all who came within the influence of her home found it a most happy and comfortable spot. May not Mrs. Hyatt's life portray that of worthy woman described in the last chapter of Proverbs: 'She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness. She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness. Her children arise up and call her blessed. A woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised. Let her own works praise he in the gates."
