Historic Old House Sold to New Yorker
One of Yorktown's most charming and historic residences was sold last week when Miss Lee Hale's property on Saw Mill River Road passed into the hands of Miss Henrietta Strong.
The house is known as Rochambeau's headquarters and is located at the turn of the Highway 118 between Broadway and the Amawalk Station on the former Amawalk Nursery property.
The sale was made by Mrs. Elizabeth M. Quinlan, real estate broker. Miss Hale the seller, purchased the property in 1940 and restored the house, which has four unusual and original fireplaces on the ground floor.
Miss Strong, the purchaser, is the owner and founder of Brownie's Blockprints, Inc., publishers of greeting cards. Miss Strong was given an old silver spoon, found on the property by Miss Hale, which she was delighted to receive. Miss Strong has a collection of 19th Century spoons which has been exhibited at the Smithsonian Institution.
Title was passed on Thursday of last week, and Miss Strong took possession at once.
