Emelie Gilbert Maurer and the Gilbert House
Emelie Gilbert Maurer at about 18 years of age |
From The Yorktowner "This photo shows the Gilbert homestead on Hanover Road, just before it was severely renovated in the early 1900s. Mrs. Macaulay remembers hearing that the snow of the Blizzard of '88 came up to the second floor windows, and during the storm, her mother somehow got around to the neighbors with food. The Gilbert home was later sold to the Cummings family, who transformed it. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, the Gilbert and Maurer properties on lower Hanover were surrounded by apple orchards and some of the trees are still standing." |
