Historical Society
With grateful appreciation to Linda Kiederer
Publications in possession of Alice E. Roker, Town Clerk of Yorktown
Publications primarily collected by Cortland P. Auser and Doris E. Auser, both of whom held the position of Historian of the Town of Yorktown successively from 1967 to 1998.
Note: Every effort was made to capture the relevant notes and articles regarding the Town of Yorktown. A casual review of the publications was undertaken meaning that every article was not read in detail. Thus, there is the possibility some references may have been missed. However, the indices were also checked for Yorktown references, where available.

Margaret McCord Robinson, "Milestones in the Town of Cortlandt," "After 1912, the Crompond Road claimed our attention and we succeeded in locating all but one of the milestones....The 4th [milestone] is on the Wm. D. Moore, Jr. property, on the left side of the road just west of Catherine Street (the entrance to the Field Home). Directly opposite this milestone stood the Andreas Miller house where Andre and Joshua Hett Smith spent the night of September 22, 1780. This stone was marked in 1929....The 5th is on the right or south side of the road opposite the entrance to Stoney Street. The 6th is over Carman Hill, about an eighth of a mile west of the Yorktown Presbyterian Church, also on the south side. These two stones have been removed for safety and will be replaced and marked when the Parkway extension and the new Crompond road are completed....Turing to the left at the triangle (the site of the Memorial to the Yorktown Soldiers of the World War), we come to the 7th milestone, just at the entrance of the 'East' or Congregational Burying Ground. It is interesting to note that the house just this side (south) was the parsonage of the Rev. Silas Constant, the Pastor of this Congregational group, which long after his death rejoined the Yorktown Presbyterians from which body it had separated during Dr. Constant's ministry. Continuing east on this road, now known as the West Somers road, we find two more; the 8th and the 9th. The last three named are to be cleaned and marked at an early date......Returning to Peekskill we come to Main Street, which, east from the Westchester County National Bank corner was formerly called the Five Mile Turnpike...The 4th [milestone] on the north side just beyond Mill Street. The 5th, the only one left on the 'Turnpike,' is just beyond Anderson's store at Shrub Oak, on the south side. This stone was found under the steps leading to the porch of the building used as a support. The entire stone was there but every trace of the inscription gone. It is now being recut and will soon be in place and the four missing ones will eventually be replaced with new stones."
"The Annual Pilgrimage, May 23, 1931," Mrs. [Margaret McCord] Robinson had collected a large number of historical relics, a partial list of which follows: Chair, dated 1725, was the property of Jesse Underhill of Yorktown, and was in his house on Sept. 23 where Major Andre and Joshua Hett Smith stopped that morning for breakfast. It was the last chair that Andre sat in before his capture that day at Tarrytown. This chair was presented to the Van Cortlandt Chapter, Daughters of the Revolution, in 1914, by Mr. William Halls, Jr., in the name of his friend, the late Stephen D. Horton of Peekskill....Old powder horn, dug up on the shores of Mohegan Lake by the late Walter Jones. Loaned by his grand-daughter, Mrs. Haviland Wessells of Mohegan Lake...Constitution of the Yorktown Baptist Church, dated April 14, 1790. Loaned by Mrs. Wm. J. Robinson, a great-great-great grand-daughter of Cornelius Ryder, the first named of the first Trustees on June 3, 1792....Family Bible of Abraham Ryder, oldest son of Cornelius. Printed in 1793--containing family record...Large pewter porringer and ladle--from the Currey family...Warming pan, listed in the effects of Jesse Fowler of Yorktown, a grandson of Joseph Fowler, who settled in Yorktown in 1760, near Lake Mohansic, then called Fowler's Pond...Bellows--among the effects of the descendants of Stephen Fowler of Yorktown (1798-1855)."
